Digger follows chaotic Texan oil tycoon Digger Rockwell, played by Tom Cruise, as he must convince the world he can save them from a disaster he caused.
Let me start by saying this movie started off great, it gave me exactly what I was expecting, it was funny, gripping and entertaining, but then for some reason at around the 30 minute mark the film shifts, given it is directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, I know he loves tone shifts and has a recognisable style, however after that shift the film really lost me, as the focus splits and my engagement faded a little.
Not to say this film is bad, far from it, I like dark comedies, the actual main story I really liked and I think if it had stuck to that the film would have been great, the production design is also unique- matching the style of Alejandro González Iñárritu’s other projects like Birdman.
Tom Cruise gives an amazing performance as Digger, on top of being unrecognisable under the amazing prosthetics, he also disappears into the character, from the way he speaks to his movements, you would not believe it’s the action superstar. I love that 64 year old Tom Cruise had to go through 6 hours of makeup to look 64 years old.
There’s even one scene where Cruise is in a one shot, mainly talking to a group of people, it lasts a good 10 minutes and the shot is never broken, that is talent.
I will say while I like the cinematography and look of the film, I really didn’t like the sound in certain moments, that might sound like a nitpick, but I saw this film in IMAX, which looked great, but some scenes are so loud it was actually deafening, there’s literally one scene that’s just shouting and the sound went through me which was a bit off putting.

Digger is out now in UK cinemas.
